Stand Up Paddle Questions

Stand up Paddleboarding, also known as stand up paddle surfing or SUP, is a water sport where you stand, with feet parallel on a board resembling a surf board but wider and thicker than an average surfboard, which gives you more buoyancy and stability.  You will use a lightweight, single blade paddle to propel, turn, and glide over the surface of the water.  You can enjoy SUP in almost any body of  water from ocean surfing, or on calm lakes, rivers gliding over the water.

While this sport is called "stand up paddling," and not "swimming," there is always a chance that you will fall in the water while out on your board. Being able to swim is an important, if not life-saving skill to have when participating in stand up paddling, and therefore highly recommended.

Yes we paddle with our kids all the time and they love it.  It's a great family outing that everyone enjoys!

Stand Up Paddleboarding is not that hard to learn and unlike surfing you can learn on almost any body of water.  To start you will find standing up on the board and paddling will be the trickiest part.  We offer lesson for those first timers to get them started on our favorite sport of SUP!

The choice is determined by a combination of a paddler's weight and skill, the intended use and the conditions.  Give us a call for help with choosing the right paddleboard for you if you get stuck. We have years of experience in making many happy paddlers.

Wear clothing that lets you move and that can get wet: shorts and a T-shirt or a swimsuit also works well.  In colder weather consider wearing a wetsuit or drysuit.

You can enjoy SUP in almost any body of  water from ocean surfing, or on calm lakes, rivers just gliding over the water.

Most of the paddlesboards we sell and rent have a traction pad attached to the top of the board.  These traction pads provide reliable grip and should not be waxed.  If you choose a paddleboard that doesn't have such a pad or soft-top, you'll need to use a base wax and a grip wax to provide traction.

Yes they can be removed for travel and storage but you won't want to paddle with out them as they help with navigating through the water

Stand just behind the center point (typically this is where the the carry handle is located) The nose (front) of the boards shouldn't pop out of the water and the tail shouldn't dig in.

Depending on which models/brands you choose, the cost of the board and paddles range from about $1,200 - $2,300 (this estimate does not include the PFD).  Give us a call and we can help you figure out what you need and what will work within your budget.

No and it's not required.  If you want to let us know what a great job we did just give us a write up on Trip Advisor or Yelp!!  Or referrals are always welcome too!

Location is determined when the lesson is booked. Frequently, we meet at the shop first to take care of gear requirements, waiver paperwork, and payment.

YES. The lagoons and rivers in the Central Florida area are teeming with wildlife: alligators included.  But in reality, you need to be worried more about sunburn and dehydration than you do about the big attack by an alligator!  An alligator sighting is very rare and would be something you can tell all your friends!

Should weather or wave conditions cause us to cancel a lesson, we will make ever effort to reschedule.  We average at 98% SUP'ing  factor during the summer months, so we rarely miss a day.  Your safety and enjoyment is our concern so we will reschedule your lesson or tour if conditions are unsafe or unfavorable. We do check the weather constantly to make sure things look good for you and try to book knowing the advance conditions.
